Common Medicare Questions

When can I enroll in Medicare?

Most people first become eligible for Medicare around age 65. Your Initial Enrollment Period generally begins 3 months before the month you turn 65, includes your birthday month, and ends 3 months after. If you qualify for Medicare because of certain disabilities or medical conditions, different enrollment rules may apply.

What if I am still working?

If you or your spouse are still working and you have health coverage through an employer, you may be able to delay certain parts of Medicare without paying a late enrollment penalty. The rules depend on the employer’s size and the type of coverage you have. Check how your employer coverage coordinates with Medicare before deciding to delay enrollment.

Can I keep my current doctor?

It depends on the Medicare coverage you choose. Original Medicare generally allows you to visit any doctor or specialist who accepts Medicare. Medicare Advantage plans typically use a network of doctors and healthcare providers, so you should check whether your preferred doctor participates in the plan.

Can I change my coverage later?

Yes. Medicare provides specific enrollment periods when you may be able to change your coverage. For example, during the Medicare Annual Enrollment Period, you can generally make certain changes to Medicare Advantage and prescription drug coverage for the following year. Other Special Enrollment Periods may apply depending on your circumstances.

Does Medicare cover prescriptions? ⌄

Yes, prescription drug coverage is available through Medicare Part D and through many Medicare Advantage plans that include drug coverage. Original Medicare by itself generally does not cover most outpatient prescription drugs, so you may need separate Part D coverage.
