TapSenior is moving forward with a clearer and more focused community mission centered on two initiatives designed to support older adults in practical and meaningful ways: free Companion Calls for seniors and the TapSenior Rewards Program. Rather than attempting to become another traditional senior care provider, TapSenior is focusing on creating connections between seniors, volunteers, families, local communities and senior-friendly businesses. At the heart of this direction is a simple belief that supporting older adults does not always require complicated services. Sometimes support begins with a friendly conversation, a person willing to listen, an opportunity to feel connected to the community, or a simple way to save money when purchasing everyday products and services. By concentrating its efforts on social connection and senior rewards, TapSenior aims to build a community-oriented platform that can grow across Canada and, over time, reach seniors in other communities as well.

One of the central parts of this mission is the TapSenior Companion Calls program, which is being developed as a completely free service for participating seniors. The purpose of Companion Calls is straightforward: to connect seniors with volunteers for friendly telephone conversations and regular social interaction. A call might involve talking about someone’s day, family, hobbies, memories, community events, interests or simply sharing a friendly conversation. The program is not intended to replace family relationships, healthcare professionals, counselling, home care, emergency services or other professional support. Instead, it is designed to add another layer of human connection to a senior’s life. Some older adults have active families and social networks but may still enjoy meeting someone new. Others may live alone, have family members living far away, experience transportation limitations or simply have fewer opportunities for regular conversation. TapSenior wants the telephone to become one of the simplest ways to create another connection.
Beginning September 24, 2026, this mission becomes even more important as TapSenior takes the lead in developing the Companion Calls initiative with support from BabaTap. BabaTap, which is focusing its own services on paid, in-person companion care, is supporting TapSenior by sharing experience and assisting with training development for volunteers participating in Companion Calls. This creates a clearer distinction between the two organizations. TapSenior will concentrate on free volunteer-based telephone companionship and community benefits for seniors, while BabaTap will concentrate on in-person companion services provided through BabaTap Pros. A senior who simply wants someone to talk with can participate in the TapSenior program without paying for a companion service. If a senior or family later determines that in-person assistance is needed, they can independently explore appropriate services available in their community, including BabaTap where available. The purpose of TapSenior Companion Calls is not to turn free conversations into paid services, but to make friendly social connection more accessible.
Volunteers will be an essential part of making this possible. TapSenior wants to create opportunities for university and college students, working professionals and other community members who are interested in giving their time to older adults. Unlike many forms of volunteering that require transportation to a specific location, a Companion Call can potentially be completed from almost anywhere that provides an appropriate, private environment. This flexibility may make volunteering more accessible to people with school, work or family responsibilities. At the same time, TapSenior recognizes that a meaningful Companion Call program requires more than simply giving volunteers a telephone number and asking them to call. Volunteers need appropriate guidance about respectful communication, privacy, personal boundaries, the purpose and limitations of their role, and how to respond when a conversation raises an issue outside the scope of friendly companionship. TapSenior therefore intends to develop the program around training, structure and responsible volunteer participation as it grows.
The second major part of TapSenior’s focused mission is the TapSenior Rewards Program, supported by the TapSenior Card. While Companion Calls address social connection, the rewards program is intended to create practical everyday value. Seniors purchase products and services throughout their communities every day, from personal care and transportation to food, household services, technology, recreation and many other categories. At the same time, thousands of businesses want to build stronger and more lasting relationships with older customers. TapSenior sees an opportunity to connect these two groups through a community rewards ecosystem designed with seniors in mind. Participating businesses can become part of the TapSenior network, while seniors can use their TapSenior Card with participating partners to access applicable benefits, collect points or receive savings according to the offers available through the program.
The goal is to make the TapSenior Card more than simply another card in someone’s wallet. Over time, TapSenior wants it to represent membership in a broader senior-friendly community. When a participating senior visits an eligible partner business, the TapSenior relationship should be easy to understand and easy to use. The program can provide businesses with another way to demonstrate that they welcome and value older customers while giving seniors an additional reason to discover participating local services. As the network develops, the value of the program can grow with it. More participating businesses can mean more places where seniors can benefit, while more participating seniors can make the network increasingly meaningful to businesses. TapSenior’s role is to help create the connection between both sides while keeping the senior experience at the center of the program.
The Companion Calls program and TapSenior Rewards Program may appear very different, but they are connected by the same underlying philosophy. One addresses social value and the other practical economic value. Companion Calls use volunteer time to create opportunities for conversation and connection. TapSenior Rewards uses partnerships with businesses to create opportunities for savings, points and senior-friendly benefits. Together, they allow TapSenior to focus on two everyday realities of aging: people benefit from meaningful social relationships, and people also want to make the most of their household budgets and purchasing decisions. TapSenior does not need to provide every senior service directly to contribute positively to these areas. Instead, it can become a platform that connects people and organizations that already have something valuable to offer one another.
This approach also creates opportunities for stronger intergenerational relationships. A university student participating in Companion Calls may speak regularly with someone several decades older and discover experiences and perspectives that would otherwise never cross their path. A retired professional may have an opportunity to share stories about work, family, travel or community history. A working adult with only a limited amount of time available for volunteering may still be able to contribute through a scheduled call. These interactions are small individually, but a large volunteer network can create thousands of moments of connection over time. TapSenior wants volunteering to be meaningful for both sides while always keeping the senior’s comfort, dignity and preferences at the center of the relationship.
As the initiative grows, maintaining a clear separation between volunteer activity and commercial services will remain important. TapSenior Companion Calls are intended to be free community-based interactions rather than unpaid substitutes for professional care or paid companion work. Volunteers who independently become interested in working with seniors professionally may choose to explore employment or service opportunities elsewhere, including applying separately to become a BabaTap Pro where appropriate. Such participation would be separate from TapSenior volunteering and subject to the requirements of the organization providing the paid service. A senior participating in free Companion Calls should likewise never feel obligated to purchase another service. Clear boundaries can help TapSenior preserve the community purpose of the program while allowing volunteers and seniors to make their own choices outside it.
TapSenior also sees an important role for businesses in building more age-friendly communities. Businesses participating in the Rewards Program are not simply locations where points may be collected; they can become part of a larger network that recognizes the growing importance of serving older consumers thoughtfully. Senior-friendly businesses may include organizations across many categories and sizes, from independent local operators to larger service providers. As TapSenior develops the network, the long-term objective is to make it easier for seniors and families to identify participating businesses while allowing businesses to communicate relevant benefits directly and transparently. The success of the rewards ecosystem will ultimately depend on whether seniors receive genuine, understandable value, which is why useful benefits and a simple user experience will be more important than merely increasing the number of participating partners.
Technology can help both parts of the mission grow without replacing the human relationships at their center. Digital systems can help organize volunteer participation, manage scheduling, support training, administer membership information, track eligible rewards and make it easier for businesses and seniors to interact with the TapSenior network. However, TapSenior’s purpose is not to build technology simply for the sake of technology. The platform should make community connection easier. A senior should not need to be highly technical to benefit from a friendly telephone conversation, and the TapSenior Card should remain understandable for people who prefer familiar and straightforward experiences. Technology should work quietly in the background while the visible value remains human connection, accessibility and practical benefits.
TapSenior’s focused mission therefore represents a deliberate choice to do fewer things with greater clarity. Free Companion Calls can build relationships between volunteers and seniors, while the TapSenior Rewards Program can connect seniors with businesses and benefits relevant to everyday life. One program gives time and conversation; the other creates opportunities for points, savings and greater participation in a senior-friendly marketplace. Together, they create a foundation for a community that can potentially grow city by city while remaining centered on older adults. TapSenior believes that stronger communities are created when people have more opportunities to connect with one another and when organizations work together to create meaningful value. Through volunteers, participating businesses, families and seniors themselves, TapSenior hopes to build a network where aging does not mean becoming less connected to the people, opportunities and communities around us.
The future of TapSenior is therefore centered on a simple but ambitious mission: helping seniors connect and helping seniors save. Through free Companion Calls, volunteers can contribute something deeply human—their time, attention and conversation. Through the TapSenior Rewards Program, participating businesses can contribute practical value through points, savings and senior-focused benefits. TapSenior will continue developing these two initiatives with the goal of making them accessible, responsible and meaningful for the communities they serve. As the network grows, the organization hopes to demonstrate that supporting seniors can involve more than traditional care services. It can also mean creating friendships across generations, strengthening local communities, connecting older consumers with businesses that value them and making everyday life a little more connected, welcoming and rewarding.
